As a part of the Master's program, students are encouraged to turn pedagogic theory into practice in the classroom. Contents provided on this page are a result of this encouragement. Below, you will find sample unit lesson plans and student materials I have created for an undergraduate composition bridge course for international students, as well as for an advanced ESL course in an Intensive English Language Program. Reflective analyses, journals, and a sample teaching video may also be viewed in the links below, or by going to the supplementary pages under Pedagogical Products.
University 109 - University Writing for International Students
In the Fall of 2014, I was given the opportunity by my program director, Dr. James Hunter, to pilot my own curriculum material. During the Spring term of 2014, I attended the class MTSL 510 - Course Design, Evaluation, and Assessment in ESL, for which I designed a curriculum emulating that of the already existing UNIV 109 course, a composition bridge course for international students offered at Gonzaga University. Through assisting the lead professor, I was able to introduce a philosophy unit to the class and continue collaborating with the professor for the remainder of the term. The link below will take you to a separate page to view the 9-day philosophy unit, providing lesson plans and student materials. To see an analysis and reflection on the unit, please visit the second link below.
As my last semester, I began my practicum course in Spring 2015. I wanted to experience another EAP setting, which brought me to the Spokane Falls Community College. There, I worked with Gonzaga alumni, Beth Ankcorn, in her advanced English language class. After a few weeks of assisting Beth in the classroom, I was given the opportunity to conduct an entire unit based on sociology. In the links below, you will find lesson plans and materials for this unit, a sample video of my teaching, pictures of activities, and other various materials I created for the class.
